Retainers
Retainers, as the name implies, retain or hold the teeth in their corrected positions. There are several types of retainers. We use a thin, clear plastic type called an Essix retainer for the upper teeth. A wire retainer is typically bonded to the inside of the lower front teeth.
It is very important that the patient wear the retainers as directed or the teeth will move. However, even with faithful patient cooperation it is possible that one or two stubborn teeth may try to rotate or move slightly.
The Essix retainer should be removed during meals and prior to brushing the teeth. In the morning it should be thoroughly rinsed with water, shaken dry, and placed in the retainer case. Remember to keep the retainer case up high, away from dogs or the retainer will be eaten.
Please call the office immediately if your retainer is lost or eaten by your dog.
